Fine Pitch Discrimination

Compare two tones and decide whether the second is higher, lower or the same.

The exercise adapts the size of the difference to help you hear increasingly subtle changes in pitch.

How it works

  1. Listen to the first reference tone.
  2. Compare the second tone.
  3. Choose higher, lower or same.
  4. Use the immediate feedback to refine your listening.

What it trains

Fine pitch discrimination develops sensitivity to small differences measured in cents. That sensitivity supports accurate singing, ensemble blend and controlled instrumental intonation.

Practice tip

Use headphones in a quiet environment and focus on pitch rather than loudness or tone colour. Short, attentive sessions are more useful than guessing through a long session.
